Change

The touch key bar under the terminal (Esc, Tab, Ctrl, arrows, ^C) had no Alt and no way to add the keys a phone keyboard hides.

  • Alt sits beside Ctrl and is on by default. Like Ctrl it holds for one key: ESC before the next character (Alt+b, Alt+Backspace, Alt+Enter), and the Alt modifier on an arrow, Home, End or Page key (CSI 1;3D, CSI 5;3~). Ctrl and Alt armed together send ESC + the control code. A paste or a report the terminal answers with (CPR, focus, mouse) passes through unchanged and leaves Alt armed (altSequence in src/lib/keys.ts).
  • Settings → Appearance → Key bar toggles the optional keys: Alt, Shift+Tab, Home/End, PgUp/PgDn, ^D, ^Z, |, ~, /. Each has a fixed place in the row (Shift+Tab after Tab, Alt after Ctrl, Home/End and PgUp/PgDn after the arrows, the rest after ^C); the order is not editable. Stored as keyBarExtras in the existing settings record, sanitized to known keys in bar order.
  • Home/End follow DECCKM like the arrows; everything still goes through term.input(), so no new send path. The input line and chat composer are untouched.
  • Desktop still shows no key bar; the setting only affects touch screens.
  • Translations for ko/ja/zh; EXTRA_KEY_CAPS registered as a label map in i18n.test.ts; key-cap names (Control D/Z, Shift Tab) added to the same-on-purpose set like Control C.
  • Docs: docs/guide.md, docs/terminal-input.md, CHANGELOG.

Note: with Alt on by default the row is 10 keys, so on a ~390px phone ^C now sits past the right edge and the row scrolls (it already scrolled on narrow cover screens).

Validation

  • bun run typecheck: clean.
  • bun run test:unit: 1370 pass, 0 fail (new cases for altSequence, the new key sequences and sanitizeKeyBarExtras).
  • bun run build: ok.
  • Browser QA on the demo build (fixture transport, no herdr session), Chromium 390×844 touch: default bar is direct, Esc, Tab, Ctrl, Alt, ←↑↓→, ^C; Alt+Left sent \x1b[1;3D and disarmed Alt; Ctrl+Alt+c sent \x1b\x03; Alt+Backspace sent \x1b\x7f; in Settings, turning Alt off and Shift+Tab, Home End and | on gave Esc, Tab, ⇧Tab, Ctrl, arrows, Home, End, ^C, |, which sent \x1b[Z, \x1b[H, | and survived a reload; settings chips checked in dark and light themes. No page errors.

…osen in Settings

Alt holds for one key like Ctrl: ESC before a character, the Alt modifier on cursor and editing keys. Settings > Appearance > Key bar turns Alt off or adds Shift+Tab, Home/End, PgUp/PgDn, ^D, ^Z, |, ~ and /.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The touch-screen terminal key bar now includes Alt by default. Alt applies to one key at a time, including letters, Enter, Backspace, and supported navigation keys.
    • Choose which optional keys appear in Settings → Appearance → Key bar, including Shift+Tab, Home/End, Page Up/Down, Ctrl+D, Ctrl+Z, |, ~, and /. Existing core keys remain available.

Walkthrough

The terminal key bar now supports configurable extra keys, with Alt enabled by default. Settings persist the selected keys. Alt modifies supported terminal input once, and the Appearance settings provide controls for the optional keys.

Changes

Terminal Key Bar

Layer / File(s) Summary
Key encodings and persisted choices
src/lib/keys.ts, src/lib/settings.ts, src/lib/keys.test.ts
Adds key sequences for navigation, control, and printable keys. Adds Alt sequence handling and sanitizes persisted optional-key selections, with tests for these behaviors.
Touch key bar and Alt input
src/components/KeyBar.tsx, src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx, docs/terminal-input.md
Renders optional keys selected for the key bar. PaneTerminal applies Alt to supported input and clears the one-shot state when a sequence is produced. The documentation describes modifier behavior and pass-through cases.
Appearance controls and supporting text
src/components/SettingsDialog.tsx, src/components/SettingsDialog.css, src/lib/i18n.*.ts, src/lib/i18n.test.ts, docs/guide.md, CHANGELOG.md
Adds Appearance controls for selecting extra keys and styles the controls. Adds translations and updates the guide and changelog with the key-bar options.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 11f42

Pane switching or pasting one character can send an unintended Alt-modified input. Fix those edge cases and the translation-key violation before merging, or explicitly accept the bounded input risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 11f42

The existing terminal permission checks remain in place. However, pending Alt state can survive a pane switch or removal of the Alt button, unexpectedly changing later input. No privilege expansion was identified in the inspected path.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Pending Alt state outlives the terminal interaction that armed it. Same-machine pane switches reuse PaneTerminal without clearing Alt, disconnect recovery also preserves it, and removing the optional Alt key hides its cancellation control without disarming it. The next eligible input can therefore be transformed in a different pane or after the modifier is no longer visible. This weakens input-state containment, although input remains directed to the current authorized pane through the existing gate.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated lifecycle effect is bounded to the mounted terminal client and subsequent input to its currently selected, input-ready pane. A same-machine pane switch preserves the component, whereas the machine identifier controls its mount identity. The inspected path does not establish unauthorized cross-machine or cross-tenant access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The PR adds input transformation rather than a new send channel or authority selector. Local mode checks and the transport readiness gate remain on the path from key-bar input to the terminal sink. These frontend observations do not constitute verification of server-side authorization.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Paste preservation is shape-dependent rather than source-dependent: altSequence transforms every one-character input, while text paste is delegated to xterm. Tests cover multi-character and bracketed-paste examples, but the currently inspected source does not resolve one-character paste framing. Consequently, the general claim that all paste bypasses Alt is not established by this coverage.

Use literal translation keys for the new button labels.

This call translates label from EXTRA_KEY_CAPS instead of using literal t("…") keys. The added label-map scan covers these entries, but it does not satisfy the repository's literal-key rule. Map each spoken label through a literal translation call.

As per path instructions, “New English i18n strings must be literal t("…") keys with entries in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.”

…h the next pane's first key

Review finding on #487: the pane-change reset cleared xterm but left the
key bar's armed modifier, so switching panes with Alt (or Ctrl, which had
the same gap) armed sent the modifier with the first key typed in the new
pane. Both arms are cleared with the rest of the pane-change reset.

Its branch had appended the tab-strip sentence to the fonts entry under

remote PC bundle to 18: #368 adds the `take-over` capability the bridge
advertises, and #477, #483, #484, #485 and #486 change what the bridge reads
(transcripts, prompts, process start times, a pane's Codex store), so a
remote PC on bundle 17 keeps the old behaviour until its bridge is updated.
Push the `remote-v18` tag and let the bundle workflow publish before
